Deceased Name: ABE KROVITZ

Abe Krovitz, 97, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008 in Duluth.

He was born on March 12, 1911 in Lithuania.

Abe was the owner of the Cash and Carry Food Market located in West Duluth from 1937 to 1969. He was president of the Duluth Retail Grocers and Meat Dealers Association of Duluth and Superior, Wis.; Chairman of the Duluth area Retail Clerk's and Meat Cutters Health and Welfare Fund; and active member of the Euclid Masonic Lodge and of the AAd Temple Shrine of Duluth. In addition Abe served as Vice President of the West Duluth Business Men's Club and was a long time board member and chairman of numerous committees in the promotion of and for the good of West Duluth. Abe was also active in many areas of the former Temple Emanuel serving on the Board of Directors, Vice President of the Temple Brotherhood, Chautauqua Society chairman and treasurer of Bnai Birth. Political involvement was part of Abe's life. The highlight was when he and Sally were invited to and attended the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy.

After Abe retired in 1972 he and Sally moved to Sun City, Ariz., where they lived for 25 years. According to Abe this was the best time of his life. While living in Sun City Abe was one of the founding board members of the then recently organized Temple Beth Shalom and was active in the Association of Reform Zionists of America (A.R.Z.A.). In 1983 he was a delegate at the International Conference of the World Union for progressive Judaism in Jerusalem and in 1984 he was a delegate representing the Congregation at the National Assemble of A.R.Z.A in Los Angeles. Abe was also an active member of the Mid-Week Lions Club where he served as chairman of several committees.

In what spare time Abe could find he enjoyed playing golf, fishing and traveling. His main passion was fishing. He had many fond memories of his fishing trips with his brothers Morris and Sam. Some of his favorite spots included the Gunflint Trail, Lake Superior, Isle Royal, the Apostle Islands and "secret' places in Canada.

After his wife Sally passed away in 2000 Abe returned to the town he loved, Duluth, Minn. He moved into Saint Ann's where he served on the food committee putting his grocery background to good use.

Abe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who always put his family first. Abe will be greatly missed as he touched the lives of everyone who knew him with his love for life, enthusiasm and courage. His warm heart influenced all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by Sally, his loving wife of 68 years.
